Assumptions
"DINK." (Double Income No Kids.)
"You guys sure do a lot."
"Must be nice to be able to travel."
We get it - it's the whole "the grass is always greener" thing. However, sometimes, these comments hurt.
Recently, Dan and I were out of town. We love sharing pictures when we travel for our friends and family to see, but we've started to get self-conscious of it. We started talking about why we now hesitate to share these things. Money and the assumptions on how people spend it is a completely different topic. Dan and I agreed that there were other hurtful assumptions being made about us.
People make the above comments as a way to laugh off and discuss things we do. However, it is a reminder to not make assumptions about people when you see them posted online.
The truth: We are filling time and trying to keep our minds off of what we so desperately want.
We had hardly any plans at the beginning of the summer. We wanted to keep our schedule open for doctor's appointments and fertility treatments. However, things haven't gone as planned. We've been bummed. We've been struggling with decisions for what to do next.
Whether or not it's the right way to handle it, we've tried to keep busy. We've made day trips here and there. (Some of these trips were centered around doctor's appointments, though.) We've gone to concerts and baseball games.
We feel like we've done a lot of sitting around, waiting, and dealing with emotions. However, when we see family and friends they keep making comments like those above or how busy we've been.
Just remember that social media doesn't tell the whole story. Comments and assumptions can hurt people in ways that you had no intention of.
If you've said these things to us, don't feel bad. We love you all and we know that they were not meant to be hurtful.
We just want to use this as an opportunity to remind you not to compare yourself to others and not to make assumptions about them. You don't know what emotions are going on behind a picture or a smiling face.
