IUI #1
Failed IUI. That word, failed, sounds painfully accurate. We are heartbroken. We knew the statistics. We tried not to get our hopes up. But every time we try something new, our hopes are automatically up. We also know that our God is stronger than statistics and trust in His plan, even though the waiting is very difficult.
The IUI process is very interesting. I explained a little previously, but we were still anxious to see exactly what that entailed.
After the Clomid, I had my scan on CD 14. They found two follicles that were 22 and 23 mm, which are the exact size you want them to be before ovulation! We were very excited by this news. I was given my trigger shot at the doctor's office with an appointment to return the next day for the IUI.
They collect the sperm sample and "wash" it an hour before the IUI. Then, the actual process of the IUI only lasts 30-60 seconds. Very simple, similar to going for an annual exam.
Not to get into too much detail, but I would like to share a few other things in case anyone else reading this is preparing for an IUI. I read a couple of blogs, but still felt unsure of what to expect. The actual IUI was not painful at all. They did have me lay there for about 20 minutes after the procedure. Then, they told me to start on Progesterone the next evening. If they give this to you, it is not a pill that you take by mouth, but it was not difficult to do - that made me nervous as well. I did have some cramping throughout the day after the IUI.
Another thing to note is that the Progesterone extended my cycle. I was between 2-4 days later than usual. This made things extra difficult as we waited since we had to wait longer than we had been counting down to.
I do have to say that sharing this information this month was a little more difficult. We had told here and much of our family about the IUI. We explained to them not to get their hopes up, but we wanted them to join us in prayer. It was much more difficult than we expected, though, to tell them it didn't work. That being said, even if we don't update for awhile, please continue to pray for this process.
We appreciate all of the prayers as we continue to move forward. We have decided to take a break this month for many reasons including travel and giving my body a break from all of the extra hormones. Please pray that we can enjoy this month "off" to recharge and stay positive moving forward. Pray that we can be relaxed and not so consumed by trying to conceive.
